I had a few different projects because with the place that I was working with FFF they do a lot of different things and they got most of them done with in a few days. The ones that I was working on they were important because they get paid aa good amount for what they do and if even one piece gets messed up that means that they have to re do the whole piece. Because of that pretty much every day was a new thing so the various things that I made where cabinets, shelves, face frame, and other things similar.
For each one there where different things that you needed to do most of it was sanding though. We had to sand pretty much everything because everything was going to be a finish surface so any saw mark or scratch was going to show from the paint. So I would sand with a belt sander which is a very powerful sander so you have to be pretty careful with it. After that we would put together what ever we where building. That would be with a nail gun and with glue to hold it together. After if there was nothing else to do to the piece we would then deliver and install the piece.

For this blog we were asked to pick a few questions to answer about our internship here are the ones that I chose to do:
How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace? I felt that I made a meaningful contribution because I felt that I helped them at least a little bit for each thing that I did. Where that be helping to just hold a window or even helping by cutting wood to a certain length. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? I felt that doing this internship helped me a lot because I now know l a lot more then I did before I joined this internship. I thought that this helped me also to improve in my woodworking skills and also the behind the scenes work to make something like a cabinet. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? It got me to think about how I could do the things that they do without their help. That didn't really change my plan for after high school but, did help me to narrow down what I need to do to get there. How might internship influence the direction of your life? This internship influenced me to become better at a specific part of a trade rather than a larger part. For instance, I knew a lot about taking a house and building it from the ground up and some of the steps to get there now I know more about what it takes to get done the things that we would have others do. That being what I did for my intern ship. Now I do still believe that this is something that I would like to do after high school as a career. For me I believe that in my internship I am definitely not the expert in any way so normally I ask questions when I need to better understand what I'm doing. When I do think that I can "improve" the way that they do things I will say something. Not always will it be better but sometimes it is.
I try to be the best that I can be at my internship there are not a lot of people there by any means so I just try to work as best as I can and be as helpful as possible. I think that by doing that I will have the other co-workers remember me and appreciate me helping them, and I know that I appreciate them helping me to better understand the trade. For my internship project I will be making a few things. Those being various different types of furniture. For example I will make some cabinmates, desks, and other things similar to that. I believe that the skills that I will need for that will be taught to me but I think that they will be seeing how to get things very close to perfectly level and knowledge of using basic power tools. I do need some support to make these but, I think that I will get it by asking my coworkers for help when I do need it.
For this blog we were asked to ask a few questions to our mentor for that I chose to ask as few about the business.
What does a typical work day look like for you? The day starts out by making sure the workers know what they need to do for the day and that they have the materials to do so. Normal hours are for 7AM to 3:30PM which is an 8 hour day because we take 30 minute off for lunch. What lead you to do this job? When I first started off I started in construction because my dad was in that business so I would help him there. Then I found out that the way to make more money is to gain knowledge, I then began to chase up the job to make more money and to learn how to make a better profit. One of those thing was seeing what we were using a lot on the jobs and then making those on site which would get rid of some of that cost. Is there anything that you wish you knew in the past that you know now? I really wish I knew how to manage my money because if you don't that that can really impact you and everyone that you are paying. So that would be like how to spend money knowing how to make a profit. like I said before with making things in house that lead me to learn how to make a business successful or profitable. How important is it to get along with your co-workers? Very if you don't you can be focusing on the wrong thing and that can lead you to make a mistake that can impact the profit of a job. For instance with this particular job you have to buy the lumber and if you mess up just one piece then you have to get all new pieces which can greatly cost the company. What skills and training are necessary for this job? For this basic math, algebra, and geometry are very vital. Also having coordination being mechanically inclined and having a good imagination are as well. For example seeing an area looks like and the steps that you need to take to get that area to the way that the customer wants. Some things are not able to be known at the start sometimes those steps will become obvious later in the build. Another very important one is to know how to fix your mistakes because everyone makes them because we are all imperfect. Sometimes by making a mistake and then fixing it you can make the product look very unique and if the customer does not notice they can even say that they have never seen something like it and like it even better. What strikes me most about this workplace is how organized and clean it is, I think that because it is a good quality to have and not everyone can accomplish that. Also that everyone there is very friendly and even though I have not done something like this they all really want to help me to learn. What strikes me most about my colleagues is how friendly they are and how they want to help me learn the job like I said before. This is because they don't need to do that they just do it because they want to and I really do appreciate that. I think that the best part of the job I am doing is how much I will use the knowledge in the future. I could use the stuff that I learn to then make my own business which could be just as good or even better. I am most excited to learn more about the job and seeing how I can do it without anyone's help. Also by seeing how they do the job because they have been doing it a lot longer than me so seeing how they do it so that way I know the most efficient way to do the job. I am mostly worried that I am not going to be as much help as I want to/need to be. That meaning I am new at this and if I don't get enough help I could end up messing up a job and I don't want to do that. Business: Fine Finish Factory
Profession: Furniture A typical work day at this site looks like going to the shop, which is a rather small warehouse with a lot of wood around and some machines that will help to make the cabinets or whatever is being made. Then getting to know what you are going to do that day. Then depending on what you are doing staying in the shop to do that work or going to a job site to get the items you need in order to know what to do. The work policies at this job are pretty easy going, as in if you show up late or don't show up at all you don't get paid for that time. The dress code at this workplace is pretty easy going you just have to wear something that is appropriate for the job. Meaning something that you can get dirty. I think that this Career day experience was pretty nice it was something that I was not used to just because of the topics that were talked about. That is because I am normally used to hearing about everything that is going to be done to the home while this time I only heard about the furniture that is going to be made because that is what pertained to them. Also it was interesting to see what people wanted to be made. I think that this job professionally would be hard to do but would also be a lot of fun because it is a super laid back environment. What I think will apply is my public speaking skills because you will have to talk to people and convince them to do something better then maybe they want. Also when designing the work to use a lot of math to get all the angles right. |
